Our History

Family Resource Center was founded in 1987 by a group of people that included men and women who had placed children for adoption, adults who were adopted as children, adoptive parents, and community members interested in the adoption process.

Since 1989 we have directly placed over 1000 children for adoption, including those with complex medical issues (HIV, Downs Syndrome, neuro fibromotosis). We have assisted another 1600 adoptive families in Illinois through our home study services program. Each year we average over 85 adoptions (domestic and international), and support another 75 families with home study services.

Family Resource Center is a non-sectarian, not-for-profit 501 (C)(3) child welfare organization. We are accredited by COA (The Council on Accreditation) and while we operate primarily in Illinois, we are licensed in both Illinois and New York.

Our volunteer board of directors has always included birth parents, adoptive parents, adult adoptees and people whose lives have been touched by adoption.

By creating an oasis of understanding, and providing an environment of comfort and trust we have built a reputation for being welcoming, responsive and accessible.
