As a birthparent, you have the right to:
- Explore several adoption resources
before choosing an agency to help you.
- Be treated with respect and dignity.
- Request and receive complete confidentiality.
- Design a personal adoption plan,
which includes defining the type of contact you have
with your child before signing final surrenders, and
after placement (photographs, letters, gifts, meetings,
etc.).
- Take an active role in choosing your baby’s
adoptive parents, including speaking with and meeting
prospective adoptive parents without obligation.
- Change adoption agencies or attorneys prior to signing
surrenders, regardless of any support that has been
provided, if you are not comfortable with the agency
or attorney.
- Verify in writing all promised
financial support and post-placement agreements with
the chosen adoption agency and parents.
- Sign final surrenders only when you are comfortable
with your decision, and to request temporary childcare
if you need additional time to consider your options.
- Receive answers to any questions
that you might have about the adoption agency and/or
adoptive parents, and to obtain any verification in
writing (adoption agency license and tax exempt status,
references, letters, confirmation that chosen parents
will raise the child, etc.).
- Choose to parent and raise your child regardless
of any support that the agency or attorney may have
provided.
