Adopting from China

More and more families are adopting from China every year. Family Resource Center's China Adoption Program has been working with the China Center for Adoption Affairs since 1995 and we have assisted more than 380 families adopt from China. Our Chicago based adoption agency's in-house China adoption program works with potential adoptive parents from start to finish: conducts adoption home studies for Illinois and New York residents; guides adoptive parents through putting together their dossier; has documents notarized, authenticated and consulate sealed; provides required adoption education and training; helps with international travel preparation; accompanies adoptive parents to China; provides translation and in-country assistance and helps orphaned children and their parents obtain required visas. Once home our China program helps adoptive parents complete post-placement reports and satisfy international adoption requirements.

Dossier Preparation Service: Family Resource Center helps parents adopting from China gather all necessary documents, then have them notarized and sealed. WE stand in line at the Chinese Consulate and the Secretary of State's office saving adoptive parents time and aggravation. We make sure that the t's are crossed and the i's dotted so that families in our China Program have paperwork that is properly prepared and ready to submit to the China Center for Adoption Affairs in Beijing.

Once an adoptive parent's dossier has been sent to China they become part of an FRC Travel Group which usually has between six and ten families. Many Travel Groups choose to get together over the months between the time their dossiers are sent to China (DTC) and the time that they receive their referrals. By the time they leave for China, families have often build strong, supportive bonds.

Family Resource Center helps adoptive families with the planning and preparation for international travel. We provide everything from packing lists to recommendations about which formula to bring, and make sure that every adoptive parent is ready when it's time to travel.

At Family Resource Center adoptive families are not required to meet in Beijing or Hong Kong first, as many other agencies do. Adoptive parents travel right to the Province where their child is waiting.

Since most of Family Resource Center's China families are from the Chicago area, adoption travel groups often continue to get together for Chinese holidays, reunions, and of course the annual FRC Picnic. These activities provide an opportunity for Chinese adoptive children to interact with other children adopted at the same time, from the same province, and frequently from the same orphanage. This sense of connection can provide a great deal of comfort and support over the years.
